What vehicle
do I need?
Short answer: if you drive an SUV, you are fine. These routes run on easy gravel tracks with a compact surface, not on technical terrain. No accessories, no modifications and no previous off-road experience required.
What actually matters
| Tyres in good condition | The one thing on the car that genuinely matters. With enough tread and the right pressure, a standard road tyre grips perfectly well on compact gravel. A worn tyre is the only failure likely to stop you. |

What you do NOT need
This is the part that surprises most people. None of this is necessary on our tours:
- Low range — there are no climbs or steps that call for it.
- Differential locks — the surface is compact; there is no axle crossing.
- Mud-terrain tyres — noisy, they wear faster and here they add nothing.
- Lift kits, bull bars, winches, snorkels — none of it ever comes into play.
- Off-road experience — you learn what you need on day one.
If you come from the off-road world looking for technical difficulty, be honest with yourself: these tours are not that. They are five-day crossings built around the landscape, relaxed driving and where you sleep and eat. We say so plainly because we would rather you did not book than book expecting something else.
What if my car is two-wheel drive?
On most stages you will not notice the difference. The tracks are easy and the gradients gentle. Where it can show is on short sections with wet ground.
So we do something simple: before confirming the booking you tell us what you drive — make, model, year and whether it is all-wheel or front-wheel drive — and we confirm the route with that in mind. If one particular section does not suit your vehicle, we give you the tarmac alternative and you rejoin the group at the next point. Nobody misses a stage because of the car.
Coming without a vehicle
4x4SPAIN can provide one. It is the option for people flying in, for anyone who would rather not drive hundreds of approach kilometres in their own car, and for anyone who simply prefers not to put their own vehicle through it. Ask us about availability when you enquire.
Is it legal to drive on these tracks?
Yes, without qualification. The whole route of all four tours runs on tracks and lanes open to public traffic. We do not enter private estates, we do not use restricted forestry tracks and we never drive off-piste.
It is a fair question, because the rules on driving rural tracks change from one Spanish region to the next and some forestry roads carry seasonal restrictions. That is exactly why the route is not improvised: it is built on lanes that can legally be driven all year. You have nothing to check and nothing to apply for.
The driving level expected
If you drive normally on the road, you can do these tours. On day one the guide runs a short briefing on the few things that change off tarmac: speed, spacing between vehicles, how to take ruts and how to cross a ford. That is all.
Throughout the route the guide leads and the support vehicle closes the group. If something happens out in the field, someone sorts it. Over five days, that is the real difference between coming with us and going on your own.
Frequently asked
Do I need a proper off-road 4x4 for these tours?
No. The tracks are easy, on compact gravel. A standard SUV with decent tyres does the whole route. You do not need low range, differential locks or mud-terrain tyres.
Will a front-wheel-drive SUV do?
On most stages, yes. The surface is compact and the gradients are gentle. Even so, tell us your model before booking: there are short sections where all-wheel drive gives more margin in the wet, and we will give you a tarmac alternative for those.
What tyres do I need?
The ones your car came with, as long as they have enough tread. Tyres are the one thing on the car that genuinely matters here — more than traction, power or any accessory.
What if I fly in and have no vehicle?
